Health Promotion and OT

Today we had a guest lecturer in our Foundations of OT class, Ms. Jami Flick, who is our fieldwork coordinator. She talked about health promotion and how occupational therapy is connected to it. One thing that I learned was all of the different factors that affect health. Typically people just think of health as biology, and whether or not you are sick, but there are several other factors that play a role in health. These are behavior of an individual, social environment (the people around you), physical environment, and available health services. There are also several social factors that affect health, which are education, food, income, peace, shelter, social justice and equity, stable ecosystem, and sustainable resources.
Something else I learned about was occupational deprivation, apartheid, and alienation. These are basically different ways people are not connected to their occupations. An example of occupational alienation would be if someone is living in an area where there is a lot of crime, and someone living there may be too afraid to leave there home, preventing them from doing their typical occupations. These subjects were very interesting to me, and I look forward to learning more about how OT can help in health promotion to better our communities.
